What it actually is
What is that musty smell, chemically?
Mold and mildew release a group of compounds called microbial volatile organic compounds, mVOCs, as part of normal growth. EPA's own guidance states these compounds are often the source of the moldy odor or musty smell people notice, and that a moldy odor by itself suggests mold is growing somewhere in the building and should be investigated.
That is a useful fact to know before you reach for a cleaning product. The smell is not dust, not dampness in the abstract, and not something a general-purpose cleaner addresses directly. It is the gas-phase byproduct of an organism actively feeding on a wet material, which means the smell exists because something, somewhere nearby, is still wet enough to support that growth right now.
