Sterling Heights: four waterways, separate sewers and the August 2014 flood
Sterling Heights names its own flood sources: the Clinton River, Red Run Drain, Plumbrook Drain and Beaver Creek, which leave their banks in heavy storms, snow melt and ice jams. The city runs separate sanitary and storm sewers, so most basement floods here come from sumps, seepage and plumbing rather than a shared sewer pipe.
The flood people still talk about is August 11, 2014, when the city recorded more than 5 inches of rain in a few hours. Two large sewers near 15 Mile and the Red Run collapsed in the weeks after. The city's Water and Sewer Division answers flooding emergencies 24 hours a day, and Sterling Heights homeowners get a 15% flood insurance discount because the city holds Class 7 in the National Flood Insurance Program.
Our headquarters is on Lakeside Circle, so Sterling Heights is home ground. Most of the city was built in the 1960s and 1970s, which means a lot of finished basements over original drain tile. See our Sterling Heights water damage restoration page.
