Identify it first
What kind of soot do I actually have, and why does it matter?
Soot is not one material. What burned, how hot it burned, and how much oxygen it had decide what kind of residue it leaves, and the restoration trade sorts that residue into a few recognized types because each one needs a different cleaning approach. Using the wrong method on the wrong type is the single most common way a cleanable soot stain turns into a permanent one.
A fire inside one house commonly produces more than one type at once. A kitchen fire that spreads from a pan to cabinets can leave protein residue near the stove, dry soot on a fast-burning cabinet door, and wet soot where synthetic material smoldered before catching. A crew tests each surface rather than assuming the whole house matches the worst room.
| Type | What produces it | How it behaves | How it cleans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry soot | Paper, wood, and similar material burning fast at a high temperature | Dry, powdery, light. Does not smear on first contact, but still grinds in under pressure | HEPA vacuum first, then a dry chemical sponge. Wet cleaning first smears the powder into the surface |
| Wet, oily soot | Plastic, rubber, and other material that smoldered at a low temperature rather than burning clean | Sticky, smeary, strong odor, coats surfaces in a thin film | A solvent-based degreaser, applied by hand, not wiped with water or an all-purpose cleaner |
| Protein residue | Burnt food, most often a kitchen fire involving meat or cooking oil | Often close to invisible on the surface, but discolors paint and varnish and carries a strong, lingering odor | Specialized cleaners and odor treatment; a crew checks by hand and by raking light, since it is hard to see |
| Fuel-oil soot (puff-back) | A malfunction in an oil-fired furnace or boiler | Fine, oily, acidic, and distributed through the whole duct system rather than one room | Full HVAC cleaning plus surface cleaning on every room the system serves, since the ducts keep recontaminating rooms until they are cleaned |
